Over the past months Rob Closs continued to add to his long list of journalistic entries with the addition of makeup and lifestyle tips in Toronto’s B Magazine.

As a featured contributor in 5 concurrent issues, September 2007 through January 2008, Rob was able to share his knowledge with readers in a fun and informative way.

‘Dazzling Style’ from the December issue was all about ‘Putting on the Ritz’ with actor/singer Jennifer Stewart from Toronto’s production of Irving Berlin’s White Christmas. In this issue, Rob’s contribution didn’t end with his article, Festive Make-up: Putting on the Ritz, but as key makeup artist on the photoshoot with Jennifer, which was featured throughout the magazine.

While on set during this photoshoot, Rob met up with stylist Diane Craig, one of Canada’s most successful image consultants. Rob’s opportunity to work with Diane Craig opened a door for new Fieldwork opportunities for his students, reinforcing the importance of networking, a key component taught at the School. As a result, graduate Grace Walling worked with Diane on a very high profile charity event as key makeup artist.

Rob continues to explore new opportunities in the industry – keep an eye open for his latest pursuits.

Advanced Airbrush
Instructor Meliase Paterson

The School of Professional Makeup has always prided itself on developing new course material to keep up with the constantly evolving industry.

This is evident with the tremendous success of Advanced Airbrush. This course is an extension of the airbrushing techniques taught in Makeup Art with Airbrush. Just one of the areas covered in Advanced Airbrush is body art.

Over the last two terms, we’ve had some spectacular work from our students. Take a look!

Rob’s Return to TV

The New Year brought with it Rob’s eagerly anticipated return to television as Key Makeup Artist with long time friends and clients Steven Sabados and Chris Hyndman (So Chic /Designer Guys). The Steven and Chris Show, a fresh new national daytime talk show, was launched on the CBC in January. The two hosts interview celebrity guests amidst bantering over entertainment, cooking, fashion, health and home decor on this innovative audience participatory “lifestyles” show.

While reviewing the early rehearsal episodes, Rob’s experienced eye noted that the frequent camera angles and close-ups of the audience revealed a serious lack of glamour between them and the hosts and guests. In a production meeting with the producers, Rob pitched the idea of having makeup done on the audience members to give the show an overall element of glam, all the while raising the caliber and prestige of the show. They loved it! Rob now takes 4 students to the set for each taping, having them create the look for the audience members. Students stay and work on set during taping, immersed in the infrastructure, working with a crew of twenty in this fast paced, high budget national TV show.

The students have received numerous thank you emails from appreciative audience members. More importantly, this Fieldwork opportunity, unique to The School of Pro Makeup, provides students a rare and amazing hands-on training experience which they can proudly and prominently place on their resume.

Check out The Steven and Chris Show, weekdays on the CBC at 2pm.

CMS - Canadian Makeup Show

The debut of the Canadian Makeup Show was a huge success and much needed event within the makeup community. The show was attended by influential industry personalities from across Canada and the United States. Featured keynote speakers included Sharon Gault (makeup artist for Madonna, Christina Aguilera & Mariah Carey), Eve Pearl (The View, GMA and Regis & Kelly) and Michael Key (Grinch, Planet of the Apes, Star Trek Voyager), Ve Neil (renowned key makeup artist for all Pirates of the Caribbean installments, Edward Scissorhands, the Rolling Stones, Celine Dion) was also present at the event and was asked to judge many of the student competitions along with many local celebrity artists such as Dino Dilio, from Cityline.

Rob was also invited as a guest lecturer, doing on-stage makeup applications demonstrating ‘smokey eyes’. He livened up the segment with his own eyebrow charts borrowed from his cross-Canada tour with the Designer Guys, Steven Sabados and Chris Hyndman. The comedic eyebrow segment featured a ‘What NOT To Do’ with his innovative Sperm Whale, Grizzly Adams and Hairy Hatchet diagrams.

Sharon Gault, aka Mamma Makeup, dropped by the School one afternoon for a surprise visit. She talked openly about her personal experiences and career path, advising the attentive listeners on the essential skills you have to master to be successful in an extremely competitive makeup industry. A wonderfully warm, approachable person, she was generous with her advice and guidance, giving out her cell phone number and email to interested students.
